Original Liner Notes

CLARENCE "GATEMOUTH" BROWN
GOT MY MOJO WORKING (4:45)
Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown is the world-famous master of Texas blues and swing guitar.  His recording career spans 40 years, but he's never stopped breaking new ground.  STANDING MY GROUND is Gatemouth's second Alligator album, and features his famed guitar as well as displaying his talents on fiddle, piano and drums.  The tunes range from big band swing to slow blues to the funky sound of Got My Mojo Working.
From the albnum Standing My Ground AL 4779
Produced by Jim Bateman with Clarence Brown

LONNIE MACK
NATURAL DISASTER (4:13)
Lonnie Mack is the quintessential American roadhouse guitarist.  He effortlessly melds blues, country and rock into a totally original "roots" style.  Besides his innovative and influential guitar (just ask Stevie Ray Vaughan about Lonnie's influence), he's a gruff and soulful vocalist.  LIVE!--ATTACK OF THE KILLER V is Lonnie's first live recording ever.  The "Killer V," by the way, is his Gibson Flying V guitar #5 that he's been playing since the late 1950s!
From the album Lonnie Mack Live!--Attack of the Killer V AL 4786
Produced by Lonnie Mack and Bruce Iglauer

CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE
RIVER HIP MAMA (4:16)
Charlie Musselwhite is a giant of blues harmonica, with a recording career that began in the mid-'60s.  Charlie is firmly rooted in the Chicago blues harp tradition, but also brings elements of jazz and even classical music into his blues.  ACE OF HARPS is Charlie's Alligator debut and the 14th album of his career.  Charlie and his red-hot band perform over 200 nights a year!
From the album Ace Of Harps AL 4781
Produced by Pat Ford

KOKO TAYLOR
TIME WILL TELL (4:46)
Koko Taylor is the Queen of the Blues.  She's the best known and most honored of all female blues artists.  Her giant voice and riveting stage presence have won her a Grammy and an unequalled eight W.C. Handy awards.  JUMP FOR JOY is Koko's sixth Alligator album and the 10th of her career, and it's been hailed as her best ever. Koko's career is one of the great success stories of the blues; she went from (literally) picking cotton to worldwide touring.  She recently made her movie debut singing in David Lynch's Wild At Heart
From the album Jump For Joy AL 4784
Produced by Bruce Iglauer, Koko Taylor and Criss Johnson

LIL' ED AND THE BLUES IMPERIALS
CHICKEN, GRAVY AND BISCUITS (3:14)
Lil' Ed and the Blues Imperials are Chicago's rocking bottleneck boogie band.  They recorded their first album in three hours and their second in eight!  Ed is Chicago's most popular slide guitar player and he puts on one of the best shows in the blues world.  Since Ed left his day job at the car wash three years ago, he and his young band have toured all over the U.S. as well as Europe and Japan.
From the album Chicken, Gravy and Biscuits AL 4772
Produced by Lil' Ed and the Blues Imperials and Bruce Iglauer

DELBERT MCCLINTON
B MOVIE BOXCAR BLUES (4:20)
Delbert mcClinton is Texas' #1 roadhouse rocker.  He's been making records since the 1960s, but LIVE FROM AUSTIN was his first live album and his first for Alligator (although he made a guest appearance on Roy Buchanan's DANCING ON THE EDGE album). Delbert tours around the world, but in the South he's a superstar. LIVE FROM AUSTIN garnered him his first Grammy nomination.
From the album Live From Austin AL 4773
Produced by Delbert McClinton, Bruce Iglauer and Don Wise

CHARLES BROWN
I STEPPED IN QUICKSAND (2:47)
Charles Brown virtually invented the sophisticated "black tie blues" style in the late 1940s. He was a giant R&B star then, and he's never stopped recording and touring. ONE MORE FOR THE ROAD was his Alligator debut, but Charles has recorded hit singles and albums for dozens of labels over his 40-year career. His classic songs like Drifting Blues have become much-recorded blues standards, but his jazzy piano and subtle vocals remain unique. Plus, he's the only man that Ray Charles calls "sir."
From the album One More For The Road AL 4771

THE KINSEY REPORT
MIDNIGHT DRIVE (4:40)
The Kinsey Report debuted their cutting-edge blues on our NEW BLUEBLOODS anthology and went on to cut 1988's award-winning EDGE OF THE CITY album. This group of three brothers and a best friend from Gary, Indiana fuse down home blues with elements of funk, rock and reggae (Donald Kinsey was Bob Marley and Peter Tosh's lead guitarist, as well as playing with Albert King). MIDNIGHT DRIVE is their second Alligator album, and will help redefine blues for the 1990s.
From the album Midnight Drive AL 4775
Produced by Bruce Iglauer, Donald Kinsey and The Kinsey Report

KENNY NEAL
THE SON I NEVER KNEW (3:48)
Kenny Neal hails from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he learned the blues from his father, the legendary harpist Raful Neal. He got his first guitar from Slim Harpo, began his career playing bass with Buddy Guy, and has fronted his own band for five years. Kenny plays not only guitar and bass, but also soulful, down home harmonica. At the age of 30, Kenny is already being named as one of the most talented of the younger generation of bluesmen, blending a strong sense of tradition with contemporary rhythms and lyrics. DEVIL CHILD is is his second Alligator album.
From the album Devil Child AL 4774
Produced by Bob Greenlee and Kenny Neal

LITTLE CHARLIE AND THE NIGHTCATS
DON'T DO IT (4:26)
Little Charlie and the Nightcats blew out of Sacramento a few years ago playing a mixture of swing, traditional Chicago blues, and early R&B they called "jumping blues." The Nightcats are fronted by the wildman guitar of Little Charlie Baty and the vocals and harmonica of Rick Estrin (who also writes most of the band's material). With three Alligator albums in three years, this band has gone from being local favorites to touring all over the U.S. and Europe.
From the album The Big Break! AL 4776
Produced by Bruce Iglauer, Charles Baty and Rick Estrin

KATIE WEBSTER
TWO-FISTED MAMA (3:22)
Katie Webster, "The Swamp Boogie Queen," is the premier purveyor of South Louisiana blues and R&B piano. Beginning her career in the '50s as a teenage studio pianist (appearing on over 300 records), Katie graduated to the Otis Redding band, and from there to a solo career. She's toured all over the world, playing both solo piano and with her own tight, funky band. TWO-FISTED MAMA! is Katie's second album for Alligator, and the best-seller of her long career.
From the album Two-Fisted Mama! AL 4777
Produced by Katie Webster, Bruce Iglauer, Vasti Jackson and Ice Cube Slim

TINSLEY ELLIS
PAWNBROKER (3:24)
Tinsely Ellis is the blues-rock guitar hero from Atlanta who has been hailed by press and fans alike as the equal of Johnny Winter and Stevie Ray Vaughan. After leading the heartfixers, one of the Southeast's most popular bands, Tinsley has gone on to forge a successful career based on both his solo albums and his red hot live performances. FANNING THE FLAMES is the second Alligator album by this soon-to-be famous young guitarist.
From the album Fanning The Flames AL 4778
Produced by Ricky Keller

SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON
I CAN'T UNDERSTAND (3:20)
Sonny Boy Williamson was one of the true giants of the blues. His career began in the 1930s in Mississippi, where he played on street corners in the little Delta towns. He went on to found "King Biscuit Time," the legendary Deep South radio show. In the '50s and '60s, he recorded classic singles for both Trumpet and Chess Records, and his harmonica style influenced literally every player who came after him. Sonny Boy's songs have become standards of the blues. In 1963 Sonny Boy toured Europe. While there, he recorded a pair of rare acoustic albums for the Danish Storyville label. KEEP IT TO OURSELVES contains the best cuts from those two gentle, personal records.
From the album Keep It To Ourselves AL 4787
Produced by Karl Emil Knudsen

LUCKY PETERSON
YOUR LIES (3:24)
Lucky Peterson is the amazing keyboardist-guitarist-vocalist who began recording at the age of four (!!), made his national television debut at the age of five, and went on to become one of the most in-demand blues players in the country. After spending his teenage years as a sideman for Bobby Bland and Little Milton, Lucky started his own band and has toured all over the U.S. and Europe. He made his debut on Alligator last year with the album LUCKY STIRKES!
From the album Triple Play AL 4789
Produced by Bob Greenlee

ELVIN BISHOP
ROLLIN' WITH MY BLUES (3:24)
Elvin Bishop was one of the pioneer players of the blues boom of the 1960s. As guitarist for the Paul Butterfield Band, he was one of the first to bring Chicago blues to the young rock audience. Moving to the Bay Area in the late 1960s, Elvin and his bands established a rampant following by bringing the flavors of rock and country (as well as a healthy helping of humor) into his blues. Elvin made his first Alligator album, BIG FUN, a couple of years ago. Rollin' With My Blues is a preview of his upcoming 1990 release.
From the album Don't Let The Bossman Get You Down! AL 4791

WILLIAM CLARKE
LOLLIPOP MAMA (3:42)
William Clarke is the young giant of West Coast blues harp players. He learned harp from the legendary George "Harmonica" Smith, a veteran of the Muddy Waters Band. After a decade of performing in the Los Angeles area, William toured across the country and around the world, and harp fans are discovering his huge sound and as well as his gruff vocal style. William recorded albums for a number of small labels in the past, and BLOWIN' LIKE HELL is his first (but not his last) for Alligator.

SAFFIRE--THE UPPITY BLUES WOMEN
SILENT THUNDER IN MY HEART (3:19)
Saffire--The Uppity Blues Women are a unique entity in the blues world. These three proudly middle-aged women left their day jobs only two years ago to make a full-time living as acoustic blues musicians. Since then, their instrumental, vocal and songwriting talents have made them cult favorites among blues fans and "women's music" fans around the world. They've made national television appearances in the U.S. and Europe, and their debut album has been 1990's surprise success story for Alligator.

THE PALADINS
I DON'T BELIEVE (3:04)
The Paladins are San Diego's intense roots rock trio that are fast becoming national favorites. Sparked by the blues/rockabilly guitar of Dave Gonzales (who also writes and sings much of the band's material), The Paladins have won a fanatic following with their sweaty, wild stage shows. They made their Alligator debut with YEARS SINCE YESTERDAY in 1988, and LET'S BUZZ! goes even further toward capturing their live energy. These guys perform over 200 nights a year, and you can hear it in every note.
From the album Let's Buzz! AL 4782
Produced by Steve Berlin and Mark Linett; co-produced by The Paladins

JAMES COTTON, JUNIOR WELLS, CAREY BELL AND BILLY BRANCH
DOWN HOME BLUES (5:45)
HARP ATTACK! brings together the three greatest living Chicago blues harmonica masters with the man destioned to be the next one. James Cotton and Junior Wells are blues superstars whose recording and performing careers span over thirty years. Carey Bell is a cult hero to harp fans worldwide. Billy Branch, who leads "The Sons of Blues" (who recorded for Alligator on both our LIVING CHICAGO BLUES and NEW BLUEBLOODS anthologies) is one of the most exciting young harp men in the world. We brought these four friends together in the Spring of 1990 for a joyous four-day supersession unlike any blues harmonica album recorded before; it's blues harp at it's best.
